The California Institute for Human Science invites applicants for the position of Part-Time Director of Outcomes Assessment and Institutional Research.


The Director of Outcomes Assessment and Institutional Research at CIHS is responsible for research design, data gathering, modeling, assessment, analysis, forecasting and reporting of educational outcomes assessment, and oversight of outcomes assessment activities as they relate to developing a WASC accreditation self-study. CIHS is a small, private, graduate institution that was granted WASC Candidate status, in June, 2018. The position is part time for now. Hours may vary due to needs of the Institute and the accreditation process as well as the availability of the Director.  The position reports to the Institute’s President, Dr. Thomas Brophy.

Essential Functions

  1. Design, collection, analysis, presentation, and communication of demographic and academic data about the Institute in particular as well as the trends in higher education in general.

  2. Design and collection of data required for the Institute’s internal program reviews, strategic planning, CA BPPE, and WASC accreditation.

  3. Provide leadership for course and program learning assessments activities; Complete institutional and programmatic assessment reports.

  4. Participate in institutional effectiveness discussions to guide continuous quality improvements.

  5. Assist faculty and administrators on professional development opportunities in topics related to best practices in institutional research and outcomes assessment.

  6. Coordination, collection, and analysis of data for assessment of practices and activities related to the CIHS strategic plan, academic plan, diversity and inclusion metrics, and other initiatives

  7. Responding to requests for data and reports from academic departments, and central offices, in collaboration with CIHS faculty and staff.

  8. Coordination, implementation, and analysis of student, faculty, staff, and alumni surveys.

  9. Increasing the institutional research capacity at CIHS by creating formal and informal professional development opportunities regarding survey design, data collection and analysis, and assessment.

  10. Participation in and contribution to institutional and academic assessment practices and initiatives to advance institutional effectiveness and improvement, especially for WASC accreditation.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Individual must possess knowledge, skills and ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the position.

  • Expertise and experience with outcomes assessment oversight at accredited universities. (Graduate of the WASC Assessment Leadership Academy is a plus.)

  • Knowledge of basic databases and experience in designing, maintaining. and reporting from multiple databases. Facility with Microsoft Excel and ability to learn and use other basic database systems such as Insightly.

  • Ability to collect, analyze, and present institutional data for external and internal audiences, ensuring privacy and security of institutional data, and complying with FERPA regulations and the Association for Institutional Research code of ethics.

  • Proficiency in survey design, implementation, and analysis for large organizations.

  • Experience with external higher education institutional reporting agencies, including WASC and BPPE.

  • Understanding of current trends and needs in higher education in the U.S, including graduate education.

  • Ability to effectively communicate data findings through written and oral presentations.

  • Ability to work independently and with a range of departments and personnel, managing and prioritizing multiple projects with the understanding of broader university goals and context of these projects.

Education/Experience

Graduate degree (or possibly current doctoral student) in education, statistics, social or behavioral science, or other related field is strongly preferred, or any combination of education and experience that provides the required skills and ability. Experience in institutional research and planning in higher education is desirable. Should possess a strong background in the design and conduct of inquiry in organizations, the ability to analyze and interpret quantitative and qualitative data, proficiency in statistical packages, experience and interest in policy and planning in higher education, organizational and administrative skills, ability to manage and prioritize projects, and excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills. Skill and experience in statistical analysis and experience working with many kinds of data are desired.
