Transfer Credits

Students pursuing a Master of Arts degree may have up to eight (8) quarter units or six (6) semester units of graduate coursework, which must be earned at an approved or regionally accredited institution, transferred to CIHS. Credits and degrees earned overseas must be translated into English and evaluated by an approved U.S. agency such as World Education Services (WES).

Students intending to pursue a Ph.D. degree must hold a master's degree or equivalent. Up to thirty (30) semester units or forty-five (45) quarter units of graduate work are accepted for transfer. This rule does not apply to students in the Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. If an applicant is accepted into the Ph.D. program without a master's degree or equivalent, the student is required to make up for the missing credits by taking extra courses.

Even if an applicant already holds a Master's degree, the Institute may request that coursework at the master’s level be taken in order to prepare the student for the Ph.D. program. The rules and regulations concerning the transfer of graduate credits are set forth by the California Education Code and are regulated by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education (Note: Authority cited, Article 16, 71865, General Provisions a, b1, b2, c, d.).

The Institute does not evaluate, accepts, or awards graduate credits based on professional experience.

Students are required to submit official academic transcripts to the Admissions Committee for evaluation. The committee will decide whether to accept or not the student’s request for transfer credit. Besides academic transcripts, the student may be required to submit documents such as academic catalogues of the schools he or she attended, course syllabi, bibliography, or even letters from instructors or program chairs.

Graduate credits seven years or older will not qualify for transfer credit, with the exception that the student can prove the validity and relevance of subject matter to the degree program or doctoral research.
