Challenge Examinations

Newly admitted students who have already earned thirty (30) semester units or forty-five (45) quarter units of graduate education credits from another state approved institution or accredited graduate school can earn up to eight (8) graduate units at the master’s level or sixteen (16) quarter units at the Ph.D. level by successfully passing the challenge examination.

The challenge examination is aimed at assessing knowledge of relevant subject areas in the curriculum.

The student’s Program Director, together with the Dean of Academic Affairs, verifies the eligibility of requests for the challenge examination. After reviewing the student’s transcripts and other supporting documents and conducting an interview with the student, the Program Director will determine whether the student is ready for the challenge examination.

The challenge examination fee is three hundred (300) dollars per four (4) units. The fee must be paid before a faculty writes the challenge examination.

The challenge examination score is mailed to the student within two weeks from the date of the exam. The challenge examination is graded either “Pass” or “Fail”.

If students fail the examination, they can retake it free of charge twice within a thirty-day period that begins on the date they first took the exam.
